A list of all my favourite music to come out this year 🎉

The Ride Majestic

Soilwork

Metal (Melodic death)

It’s Soilwork’s tenth full-length album and they show absolutely no signs of slowing down. Brutal blast beats and soaring solos are all on display, and while they won’t win any points for concept, it’s nice to have an album where you can just sit back and enjoy letting your metaphorical shit be beaten out of you without thinking too much.

If you enjoy this, fellow veteran metallers Paradise Lost’s album The Plague Within, also released this year, is worth checking out too.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Pop/Rock (Psychedelic, Garage)

The lead single Multi-Love actually appeared on my radar long before I actually bothered to check out the rest of the album. I added the song on a whim because it was so different from what I heard before - this was back when I was still using Rdio (R.I.P). As the end of the year approached and I began to gear up to prepare this list, the album appeared again, this time on a couple of other year-end lists. I decided to check it out, and boy was I pleasantly surprised. It turns out UMO’s actually quite established. Multi-Love represents their most mature effort to date. Well, musically at least, because their lyrics are still… I haven’t heard such ridiculous lyrics since RHCP.

We eat crickets in the future

Just tastes like “Far-from-home”

Drink Chicha in the Jungle

That sounds great, I’m kinda busy, could you call back again?

Im sure you’ll come back, til then I

Can’t keep checking my phone

And to know why, and why the album name is Multi-Love, it’s because the album was inspired by a failed polyamorous relationship between UMO’s Ruban Nielson, his wife Jenny, and a young woman called “Laura”. Wow.

Man, can’t get over Necessary Evil’s bassline. Kinda has that John Paul Jones/Kashmir-kinda vibe going for it, you know what I mean?

House (Deep)

The sombre, grey production just works so well in setting the mood for the album, and the guitars and vocals by Tow Howie add a lot of value into what would otherwise be “just another” deep house cut. The opening track kills, while some other tracks on the album (Tearing Me Up, Writing’s On The Wall) sound like they could’ve come from a recent Above & Beyond album (it’s a compliment). And the photographer in me is just all: “Nice album cover, man”.

Pop (Synth), Comtemporary Funk

This album is just plain fun. It’s a little late to the 80s revival party, but it surely arrived fashionably late. There’s a little bit of reggae, a little bit of Jamiroquai, a little bit of that gooey messiness you get with a vinyl-only set. It gets weak from track 5-6, but quickly picks up the pace again with the illustrious Slumlord. The vocal production has this murky quality that’s quite similar to Unknown Mortal Orchestra (whose great album Multi-Love is also on the list), but overall, production-wise it’s unassailable.

If you like this, check out Volume 1 by Magic Sword on this list too.

Anjunabeats Volume 12

Above & Beyond

Trance (Progressive, Ambient)

I’ve always loved Above & Beyond’s consistency, which, given their voluminous output, indicates that they are beyond statistical reproach as far as their taste is concerned. The twelveth instalment of their annual compilation series continues that trend of consistency. Volume 11 was probably one of my, if not the, most-played electronic albums of the past year (just listen to the first three tracks in succession - just pure nirvana).

As a testament to their brilliance, Thomas Schwartz and Fausto Fanizza, whose crazy-awesome track You Would opened Volume 11, again takes a near-opening spot on Volume 12 with Circles. Counting Down The Days was already a great track on We’re All We Need, and it’s really nice to see it being taken to another level by Yotto. Zero Gravity is a gem - a collab with legends of electronic music Tangerine Dream and Jean Michel Jarre. A rework of the classic Arty song, Katy, also makes an appearance… I could go on.

Just a great one, and it gets better towards the end, with 5 out of the last 7 songs as my favourite tracks.

I actually wanted to not like this album - seriously, TPAB is by far the most widely lauded album of 2015, and putting it on my list would have seemed too bandwagon-ey. But I can’t, because this album is just too good to ignore. I won’t pretend like I care a whole lot about how timely it is, in light of recent developments in the United States. I do care, in a detached manner, but it’s not my battle to fight.

All good stuff - that outro on King Kunta… man just channeling that Outkast. Notably, Obama chose How Much a Dollar Cost as his favourite song of the year. Says something, huh?

This album almost fell into the “Singles” category with Superego, but I gave it a few more chances and it started to grow on me quite a bit.

Btw, wondering what Leyya means?

Leyya means marketing strategy in Alaska-Yupik.

Umbras de Barbagia

Downfall of Nur

Metal (Black, Atmospheric)

The album’s name, Downfall of Nur, is an allusion to the Nuragic civilization, which occupied the island of Sardinia between the Bronze age to around 2nd century A.D. The subject matter is intensely fascinating, but an interview done by No Clean Singing with the (sole) band member Antonio Sanna explains everything far better than I can. Oh, and he’s only 19 this year.

This is an album by an extraordinarily talented musician. That the musician turns to be Jamie xx of The xx fame… I can only say, well. Only he can make a steel drum lead sound melancholic and get away with it. Six years worth of material, and I’m still hearing something new everytime I listen to it. Only thing is, you listen to this and you wonder, if he’s been at it all this while he was in The xx, why was Coexist so disappointing…?

Alabama Shakes

Rock (Blues, Soul)

Six Grammy nominations (!) don’t take anything away from Alabama Shake’s herculean effort in reanimating multiple dead genres back to life. The music video for Sound & Color is so nice too, although I have no idea what it means.

Bloom

Caligula's Horse

Rock/Metal (Progressive)

Australia’s been on a roll in 2015 with the likes of Courtney Barnett, Holy Holy, Tame Impala all putting out superb tracks. Caligula’s Horse is a recent discovery, a band from Brisbane, and while they’re definitely not scoring points for breaking boundaries, what they do manage to do is put out some great progressive rock that isn’t a wankery show (which is more than you can ask for these days). It’s not heavy - Rust is about as heavy as it gets - but the singing is actually decent, and good riffs are aplenty.

Favourite tracks

Bloom, Marigold, Firelight, Rust, Turntail

Art Angels

Grimes

Pop (Electronic, Synth)

The third track SCREAM had me thinking WTF - a Taiwanese female rapper furiously spitting bars, and I wondered if the rest of Claire Boucher’s latest effort would be just like this, and her previous albums - experimental and inaccessible. But no, this retains much of her personal style but is a lot more amenable, which is a good thing actually, because she draws from so many different sources it’s quite something to behold.

Recommendation wise, Carly Rae Jepsen’s album E•MO•TION is (way) less adventurous but otherwise quite similar in style. Definitely worth checking out too - it’s on quite a fair number of year-end lists (yes I am still in a protracted state of surprise).

Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit
Courtney Barnett

Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit

Courtney Barnett

Rock (Indie)

The music is mundane, and even downright derivative at some points, but her lyrical wit is so sharp it cuts (I thought she was British), and that alone carries the entire album.

She sings about being exploited by the music industry:

Put me on a pedestal and I’ll only disappoint you

Tell me I’m exceptional, I promise to exploit you

Give me all your money, and I’ll make some origami, honey

I think you’re a joke, but I don’t find you very funny

or courting at the pool:

I tried my very best to impress you

Held my breath longer than I normally do

I was getting dizzy

My hair was wet and frizzy

Felt my muscles burn, I took a tumble turn

For the worse, it’s a curse

My lack of athleticism, sunk like a stone

Like a first owner’s home loan

When I came to, you and your towel were gone

or about the eternal dilemma we face on a daily basis:

I wanna go out but I wanna stay home

and does so with a lackadaisical style that is compelling.

New Bermuda
Deafheaven

New Bermuda

Deafheaven

Metal (Black, Post, Atmospheric)

S Class

Deafheaven’s previous album, the epic Sunbather, automatically earned New Bermuda listening priority. I initially thought that Deafheaven had faltered a bit, but it began to dawn on me that New Bermuda is them evolving in a slightly different direction than I had envisioned (I admit, I had grandoise visions after listening to Sunbather - yes it has that kind of effect on me). It’s not as good as Sunbather in executing Deafheaven’s signature blend of shoegaze/punk/black metal, but it’s still got more than enough material to hold its own. Some people had gripes over the placement and length of the atmospheric sections, but these are subjective complaints. I had very little issues on that front. I’m glad they kept it under 50 minutes, too.

I want more of Sunbather, but this is very good.

Return to form. That’s what this album is about. Lasers and Food & Liquor II were not that bad, actually, but it just wasn’t what Lupe was about. Funnily, I came across Deliver (the lead single of Tetsuo & Youth) while googling for “bassy songs” to test my new subwoofer with. I was like, woah, this by Lupe? I need to listen to the rest of the album, and the rest was history.

At first I had patience

And then that waitin’ turned to wasting my time, my time, my time

Magic Sword

Volume 1

Magic Sword

Electronic (Synthwave, Retro)

The album tells a story of legendary proportions - a magic sword that embarks on an impossible quest to save the world from certain destruction… okay that’s not really it, but it does certainly sound like the soundtrack to a animated epic (Kungfu Fury anyone?), replete with all the epic fighting scenes and quiet reflective moments. Even the track names seem like they correspond nicely to some sort of a chronological timeline. Some parts of it kinda remind me of Justice (especially their second album Audio, Video, Disco), or Vangelis. Anyhow, I’m a sucker for stuff like this, so.

Favourite tracks

Songs
Fyfe

Songs

Fyfe

Pop (Acoustic)

Fyfe is English musician Paul Dixon’s current moniker, and Songs is an EP of acoustic versions of selected songs off his full-length album Control. I liked Control, but there two reasons I didn’t include it, but chose Songs instead. Firstly, amongst some stellar pieces, I felt that there too many weak songs. Secondly, Songs contains all of the aforementioned pieces, and the acoustic treatment greatly enhances them. I’m not sure if I like his voice in particular (I prefer his comtemporary, Tom Odell’s) but he has a great knack for writing these dinstinctive, stirring melodies.

Summertime '06

Vince Staples

Hip hop, Rap

I usually roll my eyes when I see double albums, especially hip hop ones. But Vince Staples’ debut album is surprisingly focused. Most songs hover around the 3 minute mark, often lesser, and is enough to say what he needs to say. And he has a lot to say.

I been through hell and back, I seen my momma cry

Seen my father hit the crack then hit the set to flip a sack

I done seen my homies die then went on rides to kill ‘em back

So how you say you feel me when you never had to get through that?

We live for they amusement like they view us from behind the glass

No matter what we grow into, we never gonna escape our past

So in this cage they made for me, exactly where you find me at

Whether it’s my time to leave or not, I never turn my back

My Love Is Cool

My Love Is Cool

Wolf Alice

Rock (Alternative, Grunge)

It’s funny that the album starts off with “Keep your beady eyes on me” because I knew Wolf Alice as the band with the album whose cover was a naked female torso (Blush EP - the songs were also really good too, just saying).

Their music is a slickly-produced veneer over some troubled lyrics, which is such a drastic departure from their earlier EPs that you’d think we were raising lion cubs here - cutesy one moment, and having your guts for lunch the next. You’re a Germ is about a boy who at first seems like a cool guy:

Georgie rides a bike

To pick her up from school

He likes her cause she’s pure

She likes him cause she’s heard he’s cool

Oh wait, he’s actually a creep:

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven

You ain’t going to heaven

‘Cause I’m draggin’ you down to hell

Where’s mum and dad so you can tell them?

You’re a dodgy fucker as well

Damn, that escalated quickly.

Musically wise, the album is unpredictable enough to keep you listening. They’ve been touring for a while with their previous EPs as material, but this debut album takes it to the next level. Watch the riffs on Giant Peach (Roald Dahl?) go…

I don’t tell lies no more, you know

I just don’t tell the truth

I don’t know what I’m looking for, you know

But I’m not looking for proof

Running With The Wolves

AURORA

Pop (Electronic)

S Class

I knew AURORA through a Christmas advert by John Lewis, where the music was her covering “Half The World Away” by Oasis (and quite brilliantly too, I must say). It’s hard to explain, but her music hits all the right spots for me. She doesn’t have the most technically proficient delivery, but she has this way of singing that sounds more like story-telling than just hitting all the right notes. I think she represents what Lykke Li was supposed to be, but never did.

I sincerely wish AURORA success, and I think she will get there and further. Her debut full-length album is slated to come out on 11 March 2016 under Decca - which I’m waiting for eagerly. This S Class is a no-brainer.

Favourite tracks

Dopamine
BØRNS

Dopamine

BØRNS

Pop (Indie, Alternative)

Pop albums are not particularly known for being consistent - think of them as carriers for their precious cargo (the singles). On Dopamine though, almost every song is strong, which really surprised me (in a fuzzy, pleasant way). In fact, American Money is my overall top favourite (it has this Lana Del Rey vibe to it which I really like) - and it’s not a single.

And we got caught in the storm

You started flying the kite

At the end was the key to my heart

You were my lover for life

(And what’s up with the Ø? First MØ, now this. It’s almost like the pop version of ö.)

Favourite tracks

IV

Toundra

Rock/Metal (Post, Instrumental)

Post rock is one of those that I like to call an “international genre” - you can find great examples of it from all around the world (black metal is another such genre). Toundra hails from Madrid (and another post-rock band on this list, April Rain, is from St. Petersburg). I really like Toundra’s style - it’s heavier than usual and chokeful of good riffs and breakdowns to keep me occupied. Notably, MRWING is only 2 minutes but the way it segues from Kitsune and, just swelling and coming into its own before dying away and giving way to Oro Rojo - just perfect.

Favourite tracks

Streika, Viesca, Kitsune, MRWING, Oro Rojo

On Lonely Towers
Barren Earth

On Lonely Towers

Barren Earth

Metal (Melodic Death, Progressive, Folk, Power)

Howl starts off as typical melodic death, then becomes kinda power, and then all of a sudden you have this really doom breakdown, before resuming the power-crusade-y chorus. This gives you an inkling as to what to expect on the rest of this salad of an album, the variety of styles of which still comes together to give a really enjoyable listen.

Favourite tracks

Howl, Set Alight, Chaos, The Songs Within

Lore

Lore

Elder

Metal (Stoner, Psychedelic, Sludge)

S Class

All but one of the songs in this album is longer than 10 minutes (and Deadweight’s no deadweight either, clocking in at 9:28). Don’t let that put you off though - oh who am I kidding, if you’re into progressive, this is terrific news. Seriously though, this album is one of my overall top picks of the year; I was hooked on first listen and it just keeps giving. Listen to that first two minutes of Compendium - it’s enough to make 2015’s Mastodon wish they were still living in 2006.

Favourite tracks

Sour Soul

BADBADNOTGOOD, Ghostface Killah

Rap, Modern Jazz

S Class

To be honest, despite the massive difference in street cred between BBNG and Ghostface Killah, I think BBNG really one-upped the game here. They did such an excellent job here that Ghostface Killah’s verses sound almost like a liability. Just listen to Six Degrees - that Japanese-inspired riff, and how they adjusted the guitar tone to imitate a shamisen - it’s just one of many examples of genius hiding in plain sight. And don’t even get me started on the outro on Ray Gun. Let’s just put it this way - if there was a Team Fortress 3, this would be its title track.

Almost all of the guest artists invited to drop a verse (Danny Brown on Six Degrees, Tree on Street Knowledge, Doom on Ray Gun) all end up doing a better job than Ghostface Killah does. Okay maybe I just have a thing against his style - don’t you think it’s a bit too “vulgar” for BBNG’s refined sound? Seriously, listen to Tone’s Rap and see what I mean. I don’t mean vulgar as in explicit, but I find the way he raps just comes across as too “try-hard”. It feels like he’s still stuck in 1993, except RZA’s not around. If only it had been Kendrick Lamar or Vince Staples, or even Earl Sweatshirt…

Case in point: Sour Soul Instrumental (I wish I could put this on the list instead)

Favourite tracks

Six Degrees, Stark’s Reality, Street Knowledge, Ray Gun

Polysemy
Mestis

Polysemy

Mestis

Metal (Djent, Technical, Instrumental), Fusion Jazz

On first listen, I thought - wow this really brings together all of the good of Animals as Leaders, tones down a lot of the wankery that they received flak for, and replaces it with tasteful fusion jazz-inspired breakdowns. It turns out, after a quick Google, that Mestis was actually started by AAL guitarist Javier Reyes (!), along with Intronaut bassist Joe Lester (whose album, The Direction of Last Things, is also on this list). AAL has always been about Tosin Abasi and his unearthly skill, so it’s great to see Javier take a step out and showcase himself.

Another influence was using the eight-string guitar in a form that is unconventional to the ‘trends’ or independent of characteristics that are found in music styles/genres that have popularized it

Dr. Dre did a great job keeping the album off the interwebs, so you’d probably have to buy it off iTunes (or get it through some other means) if you want to listen to it. You should, because damn, this is some good shit. Production-wise it’s as good as anything I’ve heard - ever. And it’s a huge relief, really, because of all the hype that’s been surrounding Detox, 11 years in the making, before being scraped and this taking its place as its spiritual successor (only Chinese Democracy approaches it in hype, and that was such a crushing disappointment smh).

Just go listen to it. Please. It’s really good.

Fear, fear’s a powerful thing. I mean it’s got a lot of firepower. If you can figure out a way to wrestle that fear to push you from behind rather than to stand in front of you, that’s very powerful. I always felt that I had to work harder than the next guy, just to do as well as the next guy. And to do better than the next guy, I had to just kill. And you know, to a certain extent, that’s still with me in how I work, you know, I just… go in

Singularity

Enshine

Metal (Melodic Death, Cosmic)

S Class

If Cosmic Metal isn’t already a genre, it surely must be now, because Enshine is it. Their debut album Origin was great, and Singularity takes that and adds a lot of bacon bits all over it (which means it’s even better). It’s not really power, it’s not really melodic, but it has this sound that’s designed to evoke grandeur - like that feeling you get when you cast your gaze skyward. Echoes is a great song; really great extended growls. Resurgence is also similarly celebrated, and so is Apex (especially that guitar lead that comes in at 4:44 right through the end of the album), but I think the best song on the album goes to The Final Trance. I think I enter an involuntary trance-like state at the 4 minute mark - oh wait it just came on

Meliora

Ghost B.C.

Rock/Metal (Heavy, Psychedelic)

Ghost B.C. (or simply, “Ghost”), is 6 entities - Papa Emeritus III (the third frontman for the band) and 5 instrumentalists who call themselves “Nameless Ghouls”. As a band they represent the antithesis of the Roman Catholic Church - but that’s about as black as they go. The lyrical material on Meliora is unmistakably Satanic, but the music (as well as their past two albums) is surprisingly lightweight and approachable. How approachable? They performed Stephen Colbert’s show for a Halloween special. Their theatrics and visual image remind me of David Bowie and Kiss.

Born in the Echoes

The Chemical Brothers

Big Beat

I have a weird relationship with The Chemical Brothers. I only like the stuff that they’re not really known for - Theme for Velodrome, the song they composed for the 2012 London Olympics, and the OST for Hanna (which is a pretty good movie too). Push The Button didn’t really do it for me, which maybe formed the backdrop for the appearance of this album on the list. I still don’t like the entirety of the album - but there are a few gems that remind me of what I like about TCB - edgy, catchy beats holding the weirdness at bay. The one-two punch of the first two tracks, especially, just go.

Purple
Baroness

Purple

Baroness

Rock/Metal (Stoner, Psychedelic)

The lead single, Chlorine and Wine, got released back in September, and the album itself was released in time to make 2015 (on the same day as Cage The Elephant’s Tell Me I’m Pretty, but unfortunately that didn’t make the list).

I hate to make this comparison, but as far as things go, Lore is a superior Purple. That being said, Baroness still brings a few tricks to the table which warrant it a spot on my list. It trades a measure of heaviness for this weird accessibility. I still do wish their vocals were a bit dirtier - it’s quite unsettling to hear clean vocals over such excellent riffs. The drumming is also on point.

Not to mention, their distinctive album cover style, the colour of which is indicated by the name of the album (Red, Blue, Yellow & Green, Purple), is gorgeous.
